Outdoor Small Group Photos

Outdoor photo shoots are great because they are flexible. You can choose from a wide variety of settings and backdrops. The great outdoors is also the perfect place to photograph small groups. With endless location options and plenty of space to spread out, you can find some fun and unique poses that will make your small group photos a success.

Shots From Above

If you have the option to bring the camera above the group, either by using a ladder or standing on a stair landing, take advantage of this vantage point. Small groups are the perfect subject for an over-the-top vantage point. With a limited number of people, you can easily gather everyone close enough together to fill the frame.

Go Natural

In many cases, un-posed photos are the best option. This is true for family sessions, especially. If your group has a young toddler or two, you will likely struggle with getting them to pose and smile. In these instances, shoot for candid shots. Capture photos of the family laughing and playing. Shoot them from behind as they walk and hold hands. Create memories by photographing young toddlers sitting on their grandfather’s lap and playing with their cousins.

Stagger Groups

Break your small group up into even smaller groups. Consider dividing them into individual families, ages, or heights. For weddings, you can pair bridesmaids and groomsmen. Line up the groups in a staggered manner, so that every other group is close to the camera, and the groups in between are set back a bit. The staggered line will give your shot a fresh and unique feel.

Jump for Joy

You can have some fun with your subjects with this unique shot. To achieve the look, simply line everyone up, shout “1, 2, 3!” and tell them to jump as high as they can. Click the shutter as soon as their feet lift off the ground and you can get a unique photograph of your group in the air.

Head to Head

If you are photographing a family, team members, or a group of children, try this fun pose. Have everyone lie down in the grass, with their heads lined up next to one another, and shoot from the top down as they smile up at you. This fun and casual photo is a great way to capture bright eyes and happy smiles.

Bring the Right Equipment

Outdoor photos are an awesome way to capture those special moments, but lighting can be difficult. Take your photography lighting equipment including an outdoor photo light stand with you to ensure that you can create the correct lighting for the perfect shots.
